Last semester, students in Mr. Cotton’s Computer Science 10 class at ML-Hainan had the opportunity to build, control and code QTrucks; programmable educational robots.
BUILD IT
In phase one, students worked in groups of six, following written and video instructions, building their QTrucks from scratch. This was no easy task, requiring much attention to detail, patience, and teamwork.
CONTROL IT
In phase two, students were tasked with downloading an app that enabled them to control their QTruck remotely with a phone or tablet.
Teams then competed in a QTruck football match, and afterward, had carnival-like fun collecting pies, snacks, and a mystery box with their QTrucks.
CODE IT
In phase three, students were challenged with block coding their QTruck to drive itself through a maze. This required many tests, iterations, and much cross-team collaboration to get all six QTruck coded and working properly.
Check out the video below to see the QTucks in action. (Sped up a bit, as QTrucks move awfully slow. :) )
Working with QTrucks was an extremely rewarding experience for both the students and Mr. Cotton. While challenging...and at times frustrating...we never lost hope, following the Design Process…making sure we had a fun time along the way.
